Morrisons ASDA Comparative strategies employed by giant supermarkets in the UK- A critical comparative study Introduction: Morrisons ASDA are the 2 giant leading supermarkets in London. They obtained wide popularity with their products services in UK market. This perspective study will be focusing on the analytical review of the strategies adopted by them in the business process. It will intend to make comparison of their strategic norms in the business with in depth examination comparative analysis to arrive at the suitable conclusions recommendations for their regular business policies. Morrisons is the 4th largest supermarket chain in UK It is having 11.5% share of the grocery sector in UK It is established in 382 superstores serving around 10 million shoppers in a week. Its business strategy is customer oriented focusing on selling groceries at the lower prices. Its establishments dealing only in the large superstores. It does not offer its customers an online shopping service it has not yet arrived in the financial services market. ASDA is too one of the leading supermarket in London, it is a part of the Wal-Mart family. They committed to provide services to their customer in the bright welcome environment. They strategically aimed to offer excellent standard of the customer service based on the customer service programme giving the right staff training to fulfil the needs of the customers. Varieties of products of the different brands are offered by ASDA in their superstores to achieve the customer satisfaction. Research Questions: This academic study will be purely focusing on the market strategies adopted by the leading supermarkets in their business processes. On going for the analytical review following are some of the research questions raised in my mind 1] What is the area of the business development of Morrison ASDA in UK? 2] What are the strategies adopted by Morrison ASDA for the growth expansion of their business activity in UK? 3] What are the suitable, feasible acceptable tools for their strategic analysis comparison in the business? 4] What are the comparative advantages of their strategies, policies in the business in UK? Research has been undertaken with the directions of all the subjective analysis in depth. Literature Review: Central issue behind this study analysis will be to make analysis of the recent strategies adopted by both of these supermarkets for their business development in UK to suggest them further improvements for their expansion in the area of activity in UK based on the detailed study. Martin Headen his associates has done analytical study on this topic in Jan 2009 which is purely focused on the Market Development of the ASDA Morrison in comparative analysis. They clearly stated that â€Å"Morrison is the supreme dealer of groceries in an international market seeking their promotion of sales services throughout the world, It has derived its rank with their optimum capability face to face contracts in door presentation for achieving the customer satisfaction, they are having the boom technology in the business planning premises† In the technical analysis of ASDA business strategy it has been stated in their perspective study as â€Å" 15.6 % of the grocery market is controlle d by ASDA in UK ,it is only a supermarket based petrol retailer to react a Safeways promotion, it swiftly cut its prices 0.8p per litre† [Martin et.al,2009] In his opinions given by a retail analyst he stated that â€Å"Price can make customer switch temporarily to a competitor, but it is not enough to make them stay. If the price is the only factor grocery shoppers considered, then Aldi would win every time, yet the budget chain has a UK market share of just 1.7%† [Fredric,2008] It is showing that price comparison is an important factor pointed out in this research journal for making the comparison of the strategies adopted by the supermarkets. However, it is aiming to find out that only the price is not to be treated as the sole successor for the market analysis, even for the increasing level of quality of the product in the stores price is considered to be subsidiary with in the limit of the budgets of the customers. In many cases for purchasing of the qualitative products customer prefers to spend excess above the budget, it is therefore strategic aim of the supermarkets is not always price based rather it is quality based in the product development. In the studies done by Antony Marric in his research analysis in sept.2009 he had given focus on the sustainable marketing strategies of the business developments adopted by supermarkets in Uk.He had analysed the related factors coming in the background of the research towards the porters 5 forces as a business strategy tool. He focused on the buyers power, suppliers power, market rivalry, threat of new entrants entry barriers with their inter relative impacts on each othe r in the process of the strategic business development. In his literature he has written that the â€Å" Sustainable Marketing strategy is based on the four P,s which are Price,Product,Place,Promotion the four Es which are Economy,Ecology,Ethnology,Ethics.† [Antony,2009] Antonys study purely focused on the scientific marketing strategies of the supermarkets in their business developments. It has been studied from the perspective of the customer orientation as well as the seller orientation in the market analysis. Economy is related to the cost control in the business ,Ecology is the interdisciplinary scientific study of the business interactions between the business organisms their impact on their environment analysis, Ethnology is an analytical comparisons of the origins ,distribution,technology,language,religion with that the social structure of the ethnic ,racial national divisions of the humanity where as Ethics are the benchmarks of the standard, rational code of cond ucts of the business which can be helpful for the survival stability of the business in the Market. Mccarthy Paper

Ubiquitous Love In the novels, The Road and All the Pretty Horses, by Cormac McCarthy, McCarthy shows through symbolism and setting, that ever-present love is a basic human need. In The Road, the boy symbolizes faith, and is the source of never-ending love. All the Pretty Horses, the horses symbolize an unfallen spirit, and is the basis of a deep love. In The Road, the desolate and godless world proves to be unforgiving, yet there is a beacon of light and love found through the boy. In All the Pretty Horses, the beautiful yet disappearing Wild West is a source of pain, but also love. McCarthy uses symbolism in both of his novels, to show an underlying importance, and to further enhance his overall theme of needing something concrete to love. In The Road, McCarthy shows how a father and son’s relationship is based off of the father’s unconditional love for the boy. McCarthy writes; â€Å"Can I ask you something? Yes. Of course you can. What would you do if I died? If you died I would want to die too. So you could be with me? Yes. So I could be with you. Okay† (McCarthy 11). This quote dives deep into how the man feels about the boy. Through this quote, the man fully expresses that he would not want to live if he had to live without the boy. The boy proves here to be the man’s only hope and the source of what keeps him going. The boy symbolizes faith in a godless and desolate world. In All the Pretty Horses, horses hold deep importance and meaning for John Grady Cole as he adventures away from home. McCarthy writes, â€Å"What he loved in horses was what he loved in men, the blood and the heat of the blood that ran them† (McCarthy 7). In this quote, John Grady Cole simply, but quite deeply displays his undeniable love for horses. John Grady Cole goes as far as to say that he loves horses equally as much as he loves mankind, and that both horse and man have similar qualities. McCarthy gives great symbolism to the horse, as it is being compared to mankind. Horses symbolize an unfaltering spirit that John Grady Cole so dearly idolizes as he experiences pain and anguish while his beloved Wild West slips through his fingers. The horses are the only thing that John Grady Cole can hold onto from the Wild West. He will hold on strong, no matter what happens to him, and will love horses as he loves mankind. In both The Road and All the Pretty Horses, McCarthy symbolizes holding onto something and never wanting to let go in both the boy and the horses. The boy and the horses prove to be something that is ever-present that the main characters in the novels can love unconditionally. McCarthy uses setting to further enhance plot and the theme that ever-present love is a basic human need. In The Road, McCarthy creates a desolate and destroyed world that the man and the boy find themselves trapped in. McCarthy writes, â€Å"When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he’d reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him. Nights dark beyond darkness and the days more gray each one than what had gone before. Like the onset of some cold glaucoma dimming away the world. His hand rose and fell softly with each precious breath† (McCarthy 1). In this quote, McCarthy sets the stage for what the world looks like. He describes it as extremely dark, and uses the simile of glaucoma to physically describe the Man and Boy’s experiences. The sight of this new, harmed world basically deteriorates your sight, as the world is no long worth looking at. McCarthy also uses strong and consistent word choice with dark, darkness, gray, cold and dimming. These words give rise to the depressing setting that the Man and the Boy are in. Also in this quote, describes the man’s love and protectiveness for the boy. McCarthy uses juxtaposition here to show that despite the dark, dreary and ever discouraging world they are in, there is a strong and deep love that can overcome any type of desperation. In All the Pretty Horses, McCarthy paints a beautiful country whose culture is slowly diminishing. McCarthy writes, â€Å"They rode out along the fence line and across the open pasture-land†¦The light fell away behind them. They rode out on the high prairie where they slowed the horses to a walk and the stars swarmed around them out of the blackness. They heard somewhere in that tenantless night a bell that tolled and ceased where no bell was and they rode out on the round dais of the earth which alone was dark and no light to it and which carried their figures and bore them up into the swarming stars so that they rode not under but among them† (McCarthy 30). In this quote, McCarthy sets up John Grady’s world with incredible imagery, describing the open fields, prairies and the abundance of stars that consume them. John Grady’s world is picturesque and seems quite perfect as the feeling of this quote is quite calming. But, in the face of this beauty, John Grady is still faced with the ever-present disappearance of the Wild West culture. Although McCarthy finds sadness in the beauty, John Grady is yet again placed with his horses. McCarthy describes the men and their horses as â€Å"they† showing an unbreakable bond. In both The Road and All the Pretty Horses, McCarthy uses contrasting settings to ultimately unite them by showing that ever-present love can be found no matter where you are. In the novels, The Road and All the Pretty Horses, McCarthy shows through symbolism and setting that ever-present love is a basic human need. He cleverly displays this by providing similar and contrasting elements. Humans need to know that they have something constant and concrete to love in order to survive. People tend to struggle when faced with challenges alone. The presence of something to love; whether it is a son, or a horse, is essential. Driven by curiosity, he takes a book from her house and due to the fact that it is against the law to have books, he hides it under his pillow. This spans his journey of redemption from the ideologies of his society as the incident involving the woman who commits suicide disturbs him greatly. He cannot seem to settle down and relax after this incident as he keeps on replaying the horrific death of the old woman and the deep love she had for her books (Bradbury, 125). Rising Action The incident does not go unnoticed as the captain of the department; Beatty discovers that Montag has stolen a book judging from Montags refusal to go to work the next morning. Thus, Beatty lectures Montag and tries to show him the disadvantages of reading books and how important it is to get rid of them. It seems like Captain Beatty is well aware of books and reading as he knows plenty about them. Thus, he gives Montag one day to read the book so that Montag can find for himself the fact that books are not useful and they do not have any significant knowledge. Montag finds Faber, a former English professor to help him understand the book and 20 others that he had stolen through the years. Faber becomes his mentor in his quest to read books and acquire knowledge and they use a Radio device invented by Faber himself to constantly communicate with each other (Bradbury, 118). Climax One day, Montag returns home and finds his wife and two of her friends sitting idly watching Television and talking about useless stuff. Montag is angered by this as he cannot understand their lack of awareness on the issues that are facing their society at that moment including the possibility of an atomic warfare. This prompts him to start a discussion with the three of them ignoring Fabers objection to the idea. He ends up reading a poetry book to them and in the process; his wifes friends get emotional and start to cry (Bradbury, 31). After they leave, Montag answers his firemans alarm but he is shocked to find out that it was his house that was going to be burned as his wife had reported him to the authorities. Falling Action When the firemen come, Captain Beatty instructs Montag to burn his books. However, Montag cannot hear any of this and instead, he sprays the flamethrower at the Captain and kills him. This prompts Montag to flee the city where he wanders along the railroad tracks and bumps into homeless intellectuals (Bradbury, 138). Seeing that they are intellectuals who are also rebellious against the norms of the society, Montag joins them. Resolution These intellectuals start to teach Montag how to memorize texts from books as they hope that one day, it will be possible to reproduce the written works. Hence, they all hoped that a time will come when the society would allow the existence of written books again. Montag and his newfound colleges hear jets flying over them and an atomic bomb is dropped on the city by one of the jets totally destroying it. At this instant, Montag and other intellectuals pan how they will get back to the destroyed city to rebuild a society that was literate and interested in books and knowledge. Conclusion As seen from the text, the plot of the novel flows smoothly and it can be broken down to the five elements of the Freytag pyramid. Exposition is seen at the beginning when the originally ignorant protagonist meets and befriends Clarisse, an enlightened teenager. The conflict in the story comes up when Montag witnesses the suicide of an old woman who refuse to part with her books, which prompts him to steal one of her book. Later, his actions are discovered from which he rising action is built up resulting in a climax where Montag reads a book to his wife and her friends after which his wife shockingly tells on him. The falling action comes up when the protagonist has to flee the city after he kills the Captain with the resolution evident from the point he and his newfound intellectual colleagues plan how they will rebuild a literate society after the city is destroyed by atomic weapons. This paper summarizes studies done on the physical, cognitive and emotional effects that alcohol has on people, before and after consumption. This paper accesses the effects on a person’s body, mind and soul. Alcohol affects the way a person thinks, acts, and feels.
